She argues that the dragon lore of northern India may have been inspired by "observations of oversized, extraordinary bones in the fossilbeds of the Siwalik Hills below the Himalayas" and that ancient Greek artistic depictions of the Monster of Troy may have been influenced by fossils of Samotherium, an extinct species of giraffe whose fossils are common in the Mediterranean region. ![]() In her book The First Fossil Hunters: Dinosaurs, Mammoths, and Myth in Greek and Roman Times (2000), Adrienne Mayor argues that some stories of dragons may have been inspired by ancient discoveries of fossils belonging to dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Dragons are usually said to reside in "dank caves, deep pools, wild mountain reaches, sea bottoms, haunted forests", all places which would have been fraught with danger for early human ancestors. Jones therefore concludes that dragons appear in nearly all cultures because humans have an innate fear of snakes and other animals that were major predators of humans' primate ancestors. The earliest attested dragons all resemble snakes or have snakelike attributes. ![]() He cites a study which found that approximately 39 people in a hundred are afraid of snakes and notes that fear of snakes is especially prominent in children, even in areas where snakes are rare. Jones (anthropologist) suggests a hypothesis that humans, like monkeys, have inherited instinctive reactions to snakes, large cats, and birds of prey. In his book An Instinct for Dragons (2000), David E. Nonetheless, scholars dispute where the idea of a dragon originates from and a wide variety of hypotheses have been proposed. ![]() Famous prototypical draconic creatures include the mušḫuššu of ancient Mesopotamia Apep in Egyptian mythology Vṛtra in the Rigveda the Leviathan in the Hebrew Bible Grand'Goule in the Poitou region in France Python, Ladon, Wyvern, and Kulshedra in Albanian Mythology and the Lernaean Hydra in Greek mythology Jörmungandr, Níðhöggr, and Fafnir in Norse mythology and the dragon from Beowulf. Stories about storm-gods slaying giant serpents occur throughout nearly all Near Eastern and Indo-European mythologies. Draconic creatures are first described in the mythologies of the ancient Near East and appear in ancient Mesopotamian art and literature. Several bones purported to belong to the Wawel Dragon hang outside of Wawel Cathedral, but actually belong to a Pleistocene mammal.ĭraconic creatures appear in virtually all cultures around the globe and the earliest attested reports of draconic creatures resemble giant snakes. The Greek word probably derives from an Indo-European base * derḱ- meaning "to see" the Sanskrit root दृश् ( dr̥ś-) also means "to see". This is thought to have referred to something with a "deadly glance," or unusually bright or "sharp" eyes, or because a snake's eyes appear to be always open each eye actually sees through a big transparent scale in its eyelids, which are permanently shut. The Greek word δράκων is most likely derived from the Greek verb δέρκομαι ( dérkomai) meaning "I see", the aorist form of which is ἔδρακον ( édrakon). The Greek and Latin term referred to any great serpent, not necessarily mythological. ![]() The word dragon entered the English language in the early 13th century from Old French dragon, which, in turn, comes from the Latin: draconem (nominative draco) meaning "huge serpent, dragon", from Ancient Greek δράκων, drákōn (genitive δράκοντος, drákontos) "serpent". She has, according to multiple aides, never even learned how to use a desktop computer. Whereas President Barack Obama has long publicly cultivated his geek persona, embracing new technologies, trying new tools and generally trying to prove his tech savvy, Hillary Clinton comes across in the FBI interviews as a disengaged tech user who sees the communication tools as little more than a means to an end. There’s scant oversight of the way Clinton communicated, and little thought given to how her files might be preserved for posterity-MacBook laptops with outdated archives are FedExed across the country, cutting-edge iPads are discarded quickly and BlackBerry devices are rejected for being “too heavy” as staff scrambled to cater to Clinton’s whims. Reading the FBI’s interviews, Clinton’s team hardly seems organized enough to mount any sort of sinister cover-up. Together, the documents, technically known as Form 302s, depict less a sinister and carefully calculated effort to avoid transparency than a busy and uninterested executive who shows little comfort with even the basics of technology, working with a small, harried inner circle of aides inside a bureaucracy where the IT and classification systems haven’t caught up with how business is conducted in the digital age. The interviews-taken together and reconstructed for this article into the first-ever comprehensive narrative of how her email server scandal unfolded-draw a picture of the controversy quite different from what either side has made it out to be. They may be as close to the actual truth as we may ever get. While the interviews were not technically conducted “under oath” - lying to federal agents is itself a crime, as is obstruction of justice - they do open a uniquely candid window into how the decisions around Hillary Clinton’s email server unfolded. The FBI interviewed both those who supported her and those who questioned her decisions, as well as plenty of disinterested public servants who had no allegiance or beef with her either way. The files also include the FBI’s forensic investigative process and never-before-seen details of the staff decisions that led to the server, the mechanics of Clinton’s email system, and the confusing and balky State Department processes that led a technophobic Clinton to embrace her own BlackBerry. ![]() Agents interviewed officials ranging from former Secretary of State Colin Powell to CIA officers to the IT staffer who first rented a minivan to drive the server from Washington to the Clintons’ home in New York. Then, last Friday, the FBI released the final batch of what amount to nearly 250 pages of interview notes and reports collected during the course of its investigation. ![]() A ZipCar Flexible Trip when within the ZipZone When booking you know what car you’ll have in advance – so if you have specific requirements on car size or if it’s a manual or automatic you can find an option that fits your needs (although you might have to walk a little further). You can extend the booking when you’re out but if you’re late, a fee will apply. You need to specify the time you’re looking to take it out and return it when booking – and you’ll return it to the same spot you got it from. I booked a roundtrip myself and conveniently the car was just around the corner. Under the more traditional ZipCar model, you book in advance to hire a specific car collected from a specified location where the Zipcar lives. A ZipCar Roundtrip inside or outside of London In the case of both models you can use either a physical ZipCard to access the car, or use the Zipcar mobile app to lock and unlock the car. There are two models you can use for ZipCar depending on where you’re looking to travel to. Most places required me to hire the car for the day which wasn’t needed – so I looked at options to take a car for a few hours which ultimately led me to ZipCar. I therefore started researching car hire places and day car hire places. In this case I needed to go outside London to go and look at a venue out in the countryside – and even if I took a train to the rough area, buses and local transport just wasn’t going to cut it. Therefore, your road trip will likely cost less than $85 with an economy car and less than 90$ with an SUV.I know how to drive, but in London I find I rarely need to – most places are a tube stop, bus journey or an Uber away if needed. This means you will hardly drive more than 200 miles, which is only 20 miles over the daily free mile allowance. You may want to add another 30 miles for the smaller detours to all the attractions. How much will a one-day Zipcar road trip around Oahu cost?ĭriving around Oahu and taking the long detour to Makua Beach is around 166 miles drive. Miles over the free limit will cost $0.58 per mile. Considering that many thrilling spots are remotely located and are only accessible via rough roads, the SUV option is a worthwhile investment. The SUVs are only around 6% more expensive than their economy cars. In our opinion, getting an SUV Zipcar is the most cost-effective option for a road trip around Oahu.
